Back on the Grind!

It feels so good to get back in the classroom. I'm so excited for Social Studies methods and it's going to be great to teach a history lesson this semester. This is my blog for the semester where I will be posting throughout the semester about Social Studies methods.

We got off to a great start by making our name tags. On the back of the name tags Dr. Smirnova had us number the corners of them. Then she had us close our eyes and think of a Social Studies class we have been in in the past. She had us think about what we saw on the walls, what we smell, and basically anything we can remember about this class. Then under number 1 we had to put the name of the teacher's classroom that we imagined. I put down my 6th grade teacher Mrs. Chandler. She was my favorite Social Studies teacher and was the first teacher to peak my interest in History. She was the first teacher to teach me how to take notes, and make outlines of textbooks. She also had us make food from every culture we learned about and then by the end of the year we had a cookbook. Her classroom was decorated with all of our History projects throughout the year and History posters.

Then, Dr. Smirnova had us thinking about what kind of qualities did this teacher have that made them a great teacher. I said she was very interactive, excited, and energetic which are all great qualities in a teacher. Then, she had us write what our definition of Social Studies is. I wrote, "Social Studies for me is a subject that teaches us about the past, and how we can learn from it." Then we had to write our expectations for the course, so I wrote, "I expect to learn how to be a great Social Studies teacher."

This activity was very collaborative in that we were able to hear different people's responses. Through this we were able to make a group answer based off the similarities and differences.  I learned that even though we all came from different schools, we all pretty much had the same idea of what Social Studies is and how it should be taught. Also, having us present it to the class ourselves was a great way to get us comfortable in front of the class. Having the student present their findings instead of just writing them down somewhere is very interactive for them.
